You pick the extension. JPG is the file most forms accept, and it has no transparency, so the color you choose fills any clear pixels. PNG keeps transparency. WebP is offered only when this browser can encode it, and the download is labeled WebP only if that is the type the browser produced.

How to use it

Good to know

  • Choosing the same type as the original still re-encodes the picture, so the size can change.
  • HEIC is not decoded.
  • The original file is not changed.

Questions

Does the extension match the file?

Yes. A JPG download is JPEG, a PNG download is PNG, and WebP is refused if the browser did not produce that type.

Will a PNG stay transparent?

Yes. Transparency is filled only when you choose JPG.
